How Sabre Training Changed The Face Of Air Travelling
Topics: Sabre training
Before the use of information systems and computers, airline reservation systems were completed manually. Often this would be extremely laborious and required a lot of effort from the flight crewmembers. Booking your seat on a flight would consist of placing the right ticket number to the correct allocated seat; this was extremely time consuming and would often cause mistakes.
It was not until the 1970’s that saw the first computer reservation system, Sabre (Semi-Automated Business Research Environment), was used to alleviate the problems of manually booking flight seats. With this launch of the new software, came Sabre training and new reservation systems courses, which is a major requirement for people working towards a career in travel.
History
Airline reservation systems were in constant change throughout the 1950s and 60’s. However during the 1920’s, American Airlines (AA) had faced problems with their normal manual booking system and were in much need of a change in their system. Their system consisted of a rotating card machine for each flight, if a seat was booked, the card was marked and so a team of operators would know visually whether the seat was full or not. The system was slow and had limited room for growth.
In 1952, AA began using a new system known as the Magnetronic Reservisor, which consisted of a Magnetic Drum, which consisted of each memory containing the number of seats left on each flight. This enabled AA to increase the number of bookings and for a number of operators to work on it at the same time. However, this still required a lot of effort in handling and filing the actually ticket. A chance meeting between a high-ranking IBM salesperson and the director of American Airlines had sparked a discussion about building newer automated reservation system.
IBM had been working alongside the US Air Force on the SAGE project (Semi Automatic Ground Environment) which was one of the first online systems. It was evident that this system could be used for AA, engineers at IBM began researching into an ‘electronic brain’ to reduce the problems of AAs reservation system; both IBM staffs and many of the AA team (including bookings, reservations and ticket sales) were introduced to the first Sabre training.
By 1960, the first experimental system came online based on two IBM 7090 mainframes. By 1964, Sabre had taken over all of the bookings and in 1976 the system was expanded to travel agents. Sabre is used by Eurostar and SNCF. It currently connects more than 30000 travel agents, 3 million consumers with over 400 airlines, over 50 car-rental companies, 35,000 hotels and many railways, tour companies, ferries and cruise lines.IBM had also offered their expertise across other airlines such Delta Airlines and Pan American World Airways. Sabre training has now become mandatory for all working or training to work in the travel industry.
Sabre Inc. currently holds many different brands, increasing their status as one of the top travel networking and airline project in the world. It is calculated that Sabres 2006 revenue totalled to approximately 2.8 billion dollars.
Anna Stenning has had previous experience in Sabre training and is currently changing careers from travel agency work into travel journalism. For more information on travel training courses visit www.onlinetraveltraining.co.uk
