Southampton Airport; Small But Popular

Topics: car hire southampton airport, southampton airport expansion, airport growth

Southampton Airport is one of the smaller airports in the UK that serves the needs of passengers in southern Britain. Naturally it contains the usual accompanying businesses such as restaurants, hotels and car hire companies which provide jobs for the local community. Despite being a small airport, Southampton welcomed nearly two million passengers during 2005.

Like every airport in Britain Southampton was instructed by the government to set out its growth goals until the year 2030. This is due to the government wishing to get an idea of the state of future air travel for the whole of Britain. Also, it reflects a need to understand how affiliate businesses such as car hire companies and hotels will benefit from growth and bolster local economies.

Southampton Airport is surprisingly popular with those who travel. It recently won an award for ‘Airport of the Year’ from the European Regions Airline Association validating this popularity in real terms. Added to this prestigious award Southampton Airport received a further accolade amongst Daily Telegraph readers who voted it the third best airport worldwide. Quite an achievement considering the top spots were taken by Singapore and Dubai.

The airport is hoping to expand and keep the quality of its service. Accompanying amenities such as rail links and car hire resources are major part of this planning; as is the hope to increase passenger numbers. In the goals set out in the 2006 ‘Master Plan’ Southampton Airport hoped to have six million passengers passing through by 2030. A major concern for planners is to keep the passenger focus as primary in amongst the expansion of facilities.

Unlike the major international airports in Britain, Southampton is not looking to expand from its current boundaries. The improvement of services such as hire car provisions and larger terminal areas is integral to the planning rather than enlarging airport boundaries. Also, unlike other airports in Britain Southampton is not looking to construct another runway, seemingly new runways always mean friction with local residents and this sympathetic planning runs throughout the Master Plan.

A primary consideration of planners has been the impact any expansion will have on local communities and the environment. As a result there are no provisions being made for night flights and strategies are being developed to tackle noise pollution and air quality.

These strategies involve restricting what types of aircraft are permitted to use the airport; naturally quieter models will be favoured. Also planners are working with local councils to produce aircraft routes that will minimise the disturbance to residents by avoiding built up areas.

It is hoped that by 2030 Southampton Airport will employ a further two and a half thousand people in restaurants, shops and car hire desks, as well as airport and security staff. The two and a half thousand jobs will be in addition to the fifteen hundred already in existence.

These new jobs are hoped to inject a large amount into the local economy with optimistic estimates believing that 260 million pounds will be contributed. The airport currently contributes 86 million pounds to the local economy and obviously airport planners wish to promote the increase in investment to residents.

The airport is currently awaiting a decision on a new link road that will ease travel for those in private and hire cars. It is hoped that the connection will run straight from the M27 ensuring ease of travel and less congestion in the Southampton area. The airport is also keen to exploit public transport links in line with a general strategy to reduce individual carbon emissions nationally.

The Master Plan set out by the developers at Southampton Airport is sympathetic in nature. Unlike other UK airports residential concerns seem of prime importance in the developmental stages. The increase in employment through hire car companies, restaurants and hotels is being promoted heavily as this is planner’s best card. If they can convince local residents that improvements to the airport will benefit them directly, permission for expansion should be granted.
