There is enough time between boarding calls for people to make plenty of new friends. Some travelers seem to keep to themselves because they want to ensure that they have a safe trip. Some of these business travelers are salesmen whose natural instinct is to make contact with the public in a variety of situations. These new friend opportunities are also client opportunities and with the right amount of friendly talk it is quite possible for salesmen to pick up many clients while traveling from one business meeting to another.
Some air travelers make new friends along the way by identifying with another traveler whose life situation is closely related to their life. Some travelers with children might live in the same town and simply have different places to go on that day. After conversing for a while in an airline terminal, these people might choose to exchange telephone numbers so that they can get together later for drinks and more conversation about their family life and the things they like to do in their free time.
